Front Porch Trust Scholarship
Fund 2008 Breakfast for Champions:
May 2, 2008 Call for Sponsors
Join
us in sponsoring the 2008 Front Porch Trust Scholarship Fund…
a unique opportunity for all PBPA members to make an impact
on the future!
The Paoli 250 Committee, in conjunction
with the PBPA, created the Front Porch Trust Scholarship Fund
in 2005 to recognize and reward students who are making a
difference in our community through volunteer efforts, and/or
school and civic involvement. Six scholarships are awarded
to deserving seniors at Great Valley and Conestoga High Schools.
Selection of winners is based on their school and community
work, as well as a written essay related to the Margaret Mead
quote, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s
the only thing that ever has.”
On May 2nd, all participating students
and their parents are invited to attend the Breakfast For
Champions at Paoli Hospital, our host for breakfast. Penn
Liberty Bank is again graciously willing to be the lead event
sponsor. We are appealing to local businesses and individuals
to support the Front Porch Trust Scholarship Fund, with a
tax deductible donation of any amount. All donors will be
listed in the breakfast program. Anyone contributing $250
or more will also be offered a business display table at the
breakfast.
Please send a check by April 20 to:

Locals Speak Out on Paoli Transportation
Center Delays
By Gretchen
Metz, Staff Writer, Daily Local News
Rena Coyle drives
to the Paoli train station several times a week from her home
in Newtown, Delaware County, to take the Amtrak to New York
City. She works near Penn Station in the Big Apple. Timewise,
taking the train is about the same as driving, but dollarwise,
it is
half as expensive, she said.
"I love it,"
Coyle said of the train. "I was a die-hard driver. Now
the whole family has hung up their keys. I'm a convert."

By
Gretchen Metz, Staff Writer, Daily Local News
EAST WHITELAND, March 26, 2008 - Carol Aichele wants
a Paoli Transportation Center up and running before she dies,
and she wants a slip ramp from the Pennyslvania Turnpike to
Great Valley completed by then, too.
The Chester County Commisioners’
chairwoman, in a presentation to members of the Transportation
Management Assocation of Chester County, was clear: “We
need to address these concerns. We can’t be put off
again.”

Paoli Transportation Center Proves An Elusive Proposition
By
Gretchen Metz, Staff Writer, Daily Local News
So far, it’s
been a waiting game for the business community in Paoli. The
promised Paoli Transportation Center was drafted a dozen years
ago, and planned for several years before that.
“And we’re waiting, we’re
waiting 15 years,” said David Rowland, a representative
from the Paoli Business & Professional Association who
attends discussions for the transportation center.

The
PBPA and Paoli Presbyterian Church have received several generous
gifts from “postage angels” to not only enable
the delivery of the existing 75 care boxes to soldiers in
Iraq, but we can even continue to collect more boxes to mail.
The Suburban and Wayne Times article that appeared in multiple
other local newspapers touched the hearts of many readers
who donated enough postage to send another 230 boxes.

send to Iraq or has a soldier there and would like some packages
be mailed to him/her, please contact Marie Thibault at marietbo@aol.com
or Angie Schnetzka at angie.sch@paolipres.org.

Beautification
The Welcome to Paoli Sign (west on

The Bell
PBPA received a donation
of an historic railroad train bell, that once sounded a signal
on an engine from the Erie-Pittsburgh line. The Bell was contributed
by Brian Walker in memory of his Mother Patricia Walker. Ira
Dutter of the Paoli Fire Company aided in moving the bell
from the Walker home to its new permanent site at the War
Memorial.
The Erie-Pittsburgh
Rail Line was a branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad that was
the largest coal hauler as well as the largest consumer of
coal until diesel locomotives emerged in the 1940’s
and 1950’s.

The Walk
PBPA received a grant from the DCA for improvement of the
War Memorial/Train Station sidewalk. Tredyffrin Township assisted
in removal of the old sidewalk and curb. A new curb and walkway
is in the process of being completed as the Paoli Business
& Professional Association pushes forward with making
Paoli a more walkable town.
The sidewalk will include the existing
“Heroes Walk” engraved bricks honoring past and
present armed forces members. If you have not purchased a
brick to honor a member of your family, a friend or colleague

Pedestrian Safety
Board Members, Andy Wilson and Dave Rowland met with Sergeant
Giaimo and Captain Chambers of the Tredyffrin Police in regards
to pedestrian safety. They are looking into enhancing the
cross-walks and the signage at the crosswalks to make Paoli
safer for the increasing numbers of Paoli walkers. Watch for
updates.
Paoli Master Plan – Transportation
Center
In 2001, the Paoli Community Master Plan was completed by
Norman Day Associates. This document lays out a vision for
long range development of the Paoli Community that incorporates
recommendations from the Paoli Rail Yard and Transportation
Center Plan (1996) and a study done on pedestrian facilities
and streetscaping (1996). The implementation timeline for
the Master Plan spans 20 years, although significant development
could happen in the next five to ten years.
The focal point of the Paoli Community
Master Plan is the new Paoli Transportation Center (PTC) which
is to be located approximately 800 feet to the west of the
existing train station. Due to the importance of the PTC,
the Master Plan follows principles of transit-oriented development,
which suggest a hierarchy of population densities and land
uses that correspond to the structure of transit corridors.
These findings will be supported by the adoption of new zoning
ordinances by both Tredyffrin and Willistown Townships for
the area.

Betty Colmery, retired general manager
of the Paoli Technology Enterprise Center, a business incubator,
was recently honored by the Great Valley School Board for
her lifetime of community service.
She has lived in the School District for
nearly 50 years and has worked as a part time employee of
the district. During that time she has been a girl scout leader,

“I can tell you Betty approaches
each and every one of her responsibilities with unfailing
commitment to excellence and an enthusiasm unmatched by colleagues
half her age. She is a tireless worker, and the first person
to say ‘yes’ when asked to help with any assignment,”
declared Sandy Claus when presenting the award.
PBPA remembers Brian Walker
PBPA
remembers Brian Walker, a Paoli resident who passed
away March 10. Last year, Mr. Walker
donated the Erie-Pittsburgh Railroad bell to PBPA in memory
of his mother, Patricia Walker, a long-time resident of Paoli.
The bell was installed earlier this year at the VFW Memorial
site, appropriately near the Paoli train station.
